HERE ARE YOUR TOP 4 HOME MAINTENANCE TO-DO’S FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY…

1. Vacuum out the dryer vent.

Failure to clean the dryer vent is one of the leading cause of house fires.  Not only should you be cleaning the lint filter before and after each load of laundry, but you should be cleaning the vent pipe every three months.  Don’t forget to clean the back of the dryer where lint can also build up.  While you’re at it, give your washer and dryer a good scrub. Cleaner machines, cleaner clothes!

2. Repair & repaint damage to drywall.

Forget the magic eraser. Dive into those paint and spackle cans! Now is the time to take care of smaller paint projects and touch-ups. This includes your trim. You’d be surprised how much a fresh coat of paint can make a world of difference. If you don’t feel comfortable repairing some of the drywall and trim dings then hire someone. It will be worth every penny.

3. Clean sump pump and make sure it’s working properly.

This is a biggie. Test your pump! Making sure your sump pump is working in February is essential to prepare for the increase in groundwater that spring rain storms will bring. You can test it by calling in a professional or just adding water to the pit and making sure the pump ejects it. Take a look at the pipe that drains water to the outside of your home as well and make sure nothing is obstructing it.

4. Declutter your paperwork.

This includes your digital office clutter! Go through your computer, start cleaning it up, and backing up files you don’t want to lose. Organize stray files into folders and delete anything you won’t use again. Reserve your desktop only for your frequently used items. A cluttered desktop slows down your computer. After your computer is decluttered, set up your home workspace to be an area where you can tackle bills and stay organized. Organize your files, gather paperwork for your taxes, and discard the pile ups. Store away old files in your attic to avoid over stuffing your cabinets or desk. An organized life is a happy life.
